Subject: GM's do not give programs enough time when they analyze games

Author: Uri Blass

Date: 13:10:22 11/11/01

Here is an example:

[D]r4r2/p1qn1p2/1p2pnpk/3p3p/2bP1P1Q/2PB2R1/P2N2PP/R5K1 w - - 0 19

Gm artur kogan(I am not sure about the right spelling of his name in english)
says about this position in his analysis that he planned 19.Bxg6 and assumed
that after 19...Rg8 20.Bxf7 Rxg3 21.Qxg3 black has a lost position but later hr
found the incredible move 21...Bd3

Gm kogan add that he thought to check the position with Fritz but he found that
Fritz cannot help because Fritz believes in the advantage of the material.

I also tested the position after 21...Bd3 with Deep Fritz and found that
Deep Fritz has no problem to find the right move(22.Re1)

Deep Fritz also can see a big advantage for white if I give it a long time.

it failed high with score of +0.38 at depth 17 and I expect the score to be
bigger when it solves the fail high.

I can also find in the analysis that the GM does not use computer in part of the
analysis

Here is another position that was analyzed

[D]r4rk1/p1qn1pp1/bp2pn1p/3p2B1/2PP1P2/2PB3R/P2N2PP/R2Q2K1 w - - 0 14

kogan calimed that white can get a decisive attack by 15.Bxh6 gxh6 16.Qf3 Rfd8
17.f5 for example 17...e5 18.Qg3+ Kh7 19.Nf3 Rg8 20.Ng5+ Rxg5 21.Qxg5 h5 22.dxe5
Qxe5 23.Rxh5+ Nxh5 24.f6+ kh8 25.Qh6+ Kg8 26.Qh7+ Kf8 27.Qh8#

He analyzes also 18...Kf8

In the line 18...Kh7 white can win easily by 19.Qg5 with mate in 9 if you
believe Junior7 and there is no reason to play Nf3 that wns more slowly.

I also doubt if the attack is decisive and after reading this analysis I do not
believe that the GM really investigated to be sure that the attack is decisive.

I agree that there is a strong attack for white but black has a lot of
alternatives and not only 16...Rfd8 and without analyzing everyone of them it is
simply impossible to know if the strong attack is decisive against correct
defence.
