Alpha 21164A at 600 MHz gets a specint95 of 18.8
Pentium II at 400 MHz gets a specint95 of 15.8

(source: www.microprocessor.sscc.ru/microprocessor/
which is a cool site, by the way.)

So they are close, but the Alpha still has the edge; of course
the 21164 is not the most current Alpha chip.

The new Alpha 21264A at 600 MHz should get a specint95 of 40+. Does
anyone know the exact number? My understanding is that this
chip will also reach clock rates much higher than 600 MHz.

I think they were bought by Compaq, but will still produce the Alpha
(and later generations) for some time. Intel has some access to
the Alpha technology, but I am not sure what the exact relationship
is.

Of course, floating point is where the Alpha really flies... I hope they
keep making it, so that those of us who do lots of FFT's and other
floating
point math can continue to fly.
