The nice part is that under many answers and questions made here
Can also been seen in an other light
To change the story from 3d programs to unix is a combo I don't understand.
About Microsoft The 3d Grapic industry already uses dongel drivers for years
know
It is also better then the software licensment of Microsoft because you do not
have to be carefull wich hardware you ad to your computer.

You can also use a 3d program to create you chesspieces and boards and make a
game of it in a program like Maya.

The story about batlechess I always liked Interplay still picks the fruits from
this program
I also have combatchess
This program is much stronger but not as much animations
And terminator chess (A folow up is something I try to create myself
In an otherway but with the same kind of idea}
It played movies after each capture instead of animations on the board)

Like warlord ( the first strategy game) also showed close ups from the battle
when you where fighting
against the enemy an idea wich later on never was used again ( a pity because
this could be a very nice idea with todays technics)

Chessmaster actualy developed itself after each hardware posibilety
It already did use 3d pieces in Chessmaster 2100!
It did use voice ( from Karpov) and the piece graphics where improved because
the videocards where improved in Chessmaster 3000 in these days the competition
came from Kasparov's Gambit wich even used small videos from Kasparov
Then chessbase came with Fritz4 also with 3d pieces!
Wich never realy changed after this version

Lately a name was used Jan Louwman he told me that in 1998 the programers
destroyed the chess software industry (Ofcourse it almost became imposible for
him to buy chess computers in the forehand because he didn't know if he could
sell them which was not such a big problem some years before)
The programs became to strong and could not be improved anymore
Which basicaly is the treuth
Chessprograms never became stronger after 1998 only small adjustments
and new books
To my opinion Junior is at the moment the only program wich indeed has changed a
litle (by new piece table bases though I never did hear from Frans he did use
the Fritz piece table bases but I know he does one update from Fritz5 made this
very clear)
And the only thing which realy could be improved
never did improve "Positional knowledge"
In 1997 I like the improvemets of the chessprograms
Know I am rather bored by games wich are totaly not bases on the positional
bases but rather on chance.
Though I must admit my day is ok if a program indeed does find the right moves
from the start
Wich is seldom but it happens

From the time I bought Powerchess I already gave the positions to the
chessprograms to see if they could find the solutions.
In most of the cases they did not
A big laughter folowed after the explanations of the queen.
And I already told him back then that giving chessprograms more media
Should be the way to keep them on the market

But above all the customers you get are from a much bigger ranche
kids , people who know chess but don't make a pasion from it,The General chess
players
And even chess geeks like myself.
And the nice part of this kind of program is that it doesn't have to be
extremely strong to be sold
If it even becomes strong even the people who do not like the 3d programs like
it
Ofcourse you also still can at the 2d boards at it

The problem of this media is only that you have to need a crew to work on this
(Or someone with many talents)
 kind of program
Because one has to create ideas for the program
one needs to know how to create a gui.
One needs to know how to create 3d pieces and boards and animations.
One needs to know how to use the media
One needs to know how to create a chessprogram.
One needs to know something from openings and creating books.
One needs to know what is important for chess positions.
