Well, I think you are right not to want to fight, so allow me to suggest an improvement: "My chess program is smarter than your chess program - you disagree? Then we play chess" What could be more logical? If we fight, and you win, my program is still smarter than yours, even though you fight better than I fight. But if we play chess, and my program loses to your program, then it is clear whose program is smarter. Seriously, I think the more competition new programs can get, the better they will play, as the feedback to the programmer is invaluable. In this regard, may I suggest that you enter your program in the Summer 98 chess computer tournament being organised by Dr Torsten Tschoop. I know he is keen to attract programs that have not competed before, and it does not matter if your program is not fully complete, eg no opneing book etc. You can e-mail him on Tschoop@aol.com if you are interested.
