For a huge number of reasons[1]. First, the market is small. Second, you need a great chess programmer to make a great chess program. Ed, Amir, Franz, and Christophe are busy with their own chess programs right now. Deiter lives in Germany and Robert is busy teaching. In short, the really good chess programmers are in short supply. And I don't think one dozen average-level chess programmers would write as good a program as one real expert. Third, they're busy dominating the world right now. That leaves little time for playing with toys -- like moving little wooden horsies around on a cardboard square. ;-) [1] Err... 3 of them. But 3 *is* huge when compared with 1e-300.
