For Crafty, just start it in text mode, by opening a window and typing "crafty" then use cut/paste to cut the FEN from a post here, and paste directly into crafty. It will recognize the FEN and set the position up to match it. Couldn't be easier... Then you can enter analyze mode, or just tell it to "go" and find the best move, or you can set a specific time/depth first...
