Air travel around major holidays is very expensive.  Not to mention the
fact that July 4 is a common "family gathering time" here.  Its a problem,
at least for some...

This is not quite true.  I attended the last ACM computer chess tournament
which was held in 1994.  _all_ were held in the USA and were sponsored by
the ACM and private sponsors (last one was partially sponsored by IBM, for
example).
