Subject: Come see Junior play (round 5)

Author: Amir Ban

Date: 03:03:13 06/02/98

It was Monday evening again, and Junior met FM Boris Mariasin (ELO 2350)
in the 5th round of the Dov Porat Memorial. Mariasin is known for his
sharp and fighting style. Junior already met him last year in a game
where it had a big advantage, but misplayed the endgame to allow a
draw. I thought it would be possible to pick up the missing 1/2 point
this time, but things worked out differently.

In a QGA, Junior's first move out of book created an open and active
middlegame. The master surpised Junior with 16...g5 and later with
21...Rad8, giving up a pawn for a permanent bind on f2 in an
opposite-color bishop middlegame. Both sides thought they had chances,
so the draw was disappointing for both.
