If you talk only about micros than program seems to be close to do it(Chess tiger 14 did performance of almost 2800 in the last tournament). I believe that deeper search of more 5 plies with no software improvement is more than enough to beat the world champion and with branching factor of 3 I expect it to happen before 2018. The only hope for humans is if the world champion learns a lot from chess programs to improve his(her) game. I also expect big software improvement so I will be surprised if programs cannot beat the world champion before 2010. Uri
