Subject: When writing a Chess Program which techniques can't be used together?

I would eventually like to write a program , i just don't know when i will get
around to do it. I am curious as to how much work has to go into just displaying
the board and weather or not i would need to adjust that part with additions to
the knowledge of the program. Or is that part once done... done?
