So you're arguing my original point.  After some consideration
I think either approach is fine.

Personally, I do

if (depth <= -10) { EvalV(cp,alpha,beta,&w); }

Or are you proposing something else?  Perhaps a different depth or
something dynamic?

I may throw in a counter one of these days just to see how often
that cutoff is triggered in game play.  Maybe after the semester
ends...
