It's been a few years since I purchased a dedicated chess computer. The last one I purchased was a Saitek Kasparov "Travel Champion 2100." It's a pleasing and attractive unit whose program earned a rating of 1879 on the Swedish list. Larry Kaufman used to claim that the Swedish ratings were about 180 points below USCF ratings. Don't know if that's so, but if I add 180 points to 1879, I get a rating that's close to the strength claimed by the manufacturer. Anyway, I need a new machine. I want a strong, portable unit, but I don't want to spend hundreds of dollars. A stronger version of what I have will suit me just fine The Saitek Cosmos is available from the "Your Move" online store for $99.95, which is a good bit less than I paid for the Travel Champion. The photo suggests that the unit is almost identical in design to the TC2100. The estimated strength is given as 2200 at 40/120. When the TC2100 was introduced, the rating was estimated at 2100. So -- a lower price, and a claimed increase in strength of 100! I'd like to hear from anyone who has a Cosmos -- recommendations, criticisms, etc. I'm also interested to know how the "Estimated Rating" of 2200 was estimated. I'm fully prepared to be ignored on this one. :) Thanks.
