Thanks for your comments. I have recently installed new 'always on' anti-virus software. I shall look at that side carefully. Dummy sessions shown on the taskbar has plagued me in the past. It mainly happened as soon as the screen saver is invoked. I cancel the screen saver but the task bar entry is not cleared down straight away. I think this used to happen before the SE edition. I also experienced it on NT4 before about SPO3 i think) I don't get it now. To clear it I used to click on the blank entry (command button on the task bar) that woke the system up and it realised just to cancel the entry. The interface I have been using where the problems manifested themselves was the standard interface that comes with Fritz 7. I have since switched to the interface that comes with Junior 7. I am a little more used to the J7 interface as there are some small but significant changes in the way the new F7 interface behaves when starting a new game to setup a new position for analysis. I'll get used to the new interface over time, but I'm trying to establish where the problems arise by reducing the unknown variables as much as possible. It's ironic I have just installed a new ISP package which automatically installs anti-virus software, and I never gave it a second thought about parallel contention. Thanks again for your suggestions. Keith
