The notation is as follows:

''' the only value-preserving move
         - after ignoring rare physical symmetry

'' the only value-preserving move
         - after ignoring both rare physical symmetry and 'time-wasting moves'
(whereby the defender can at least force an attacker back to the current
position if the win is to be preserved.)

' the only optimal [in terms of some metric, e.g. DTC, DTM or DTZ) move
          - after ignoring rare physical symmetry
          - DTC = Depth to Conversion (mate and/or force-change)
          - DTM = Depth to Mate
          - DTZ = Depth to (move-count) zeroing move
                    (mate and/or force-change and/or Pawn-push)

<degree-sign> the only legal move (after ignoring rare physical symmetry)

This notation was defined in 1999 with the encouragement of Noam Elkies and has
the merits of being:

        - unobtrusive
        - complementary to the subjective marks !, ?, !? etc
        - semi-compatable with a .pgn reader
they don't get in the way but they do get 'wiped out'
