Fritz 6 says that Black had a couple chances to survive longer. First was to
play 1...f5 in response to 1.g4! Second was to play 2...Rf4 (after 1.g4! Re4
2.a5). White still wins in both cases, but not quite so quickly or nicely:
1.g4! Re4
[1...f5 2.Re3 Rxe3 3.Kxe3 e5 4.b3 Kd7 5.Kf3 Kd6 6.Kg3 Kd7 7.gxf5 gxf5
8.Kh4+-]
2.a5 Rf4
[2...Rxg4? 3.a6 Rg1
(3...Rh4 4.Rd8! Kxd8 5.a7)
4.a7 Ra1 5.Ra3!+-]
3.Ke3 e5 4.g5
[4.a6? Rf6 +=]
4...Rh4 5.a6 Rh8 6.Rd5 Ra8 7.Rxc5 Rxa6 8.Rxe5+ +-
