Especially in endgames where passed pawns often score several times their usual value purely because of their position. Obviously a pawn about to promote is worth almost the same as a queen. Things like passed pawns should be included in your rough positional estimate. What I do is make a rough guess (lazy eval) to the position including everything that should make the score vary by a lot. Then if this falls within a certain window I calculate a more accurate 'proper' eval. Cheers, Col
