BSD Unix: Crafty is probably the best open source program which works with
XBoard.  However, it is optimized for the features and quirks of the x86 and PC
architecture.  (many other freeware engines are Windows only).

OS X native: I don't know of any yet.  Has anyone ported XBoard to Quartz?

Classic: Hiarcs is the strongest, but the UI is crufty.  Sigma chess is probably
the most featureful, though weak.  I have no idea whether they actually run in
classic mode under OS X.
