I guess I've been lucky.  I use scores of apps (some quite old) and fewer than
5% fail.

Yes, that's what I've been hearing too.  WinXP is a good upgrade for most people
running Win98, ME, or NT4 (who have enough hardware), but not worth it if you
are already running Win2000 -- unless you have specific games (or whatever) that
you know will work under XP but don't work under 2000.

Rebel is a lost cause, sad to say.  But CM8000 runs pretty well under XP for
most people.

Have you considered getting a Cable/DSL router?  They've come way down in price,
at least in the US, and they are very useful for sharing your connection (among
other benefits).  Once you get the router working with your provider (was easy
in my case), you can add and remove PCs & Macs, change OSs, etc., without
affecting your ability to get service.  And you don't even have to call the
provider to provision a different computer, since your computers are all hidden
"behind" your router.  In a sense, the router becomes the provider to all your
computers, so you have more control.
