Please allow me to distance myself from the whole "chess is nearly solved"
thing. I never agreed with that part! Nor did I agree that this position is
THE definitive test position -- there have been many other excellent ones posted
here, and no single position (other than chess's opening position) can be that
important. Even suites of dozens of excellent positions do not definitively
rank a chess program, much less determine if chess is "nearly solved."

My defense of Ali was limited to agreeing that it's OK to post a chess position
and say that solving the associated "puzzle" involves not only finding move 1
(which is all that's required in traditional chess problems), but also the rest
of the key line up to at least 5. e6 -- since it's HIS "puzzle" and not a
standard chess problem, he should be allowed to say up front what the rules of
the puzzle are. Its similarity to a standard chess problem unfortunately caused
confusion.

I can see that at least two programs (Galdalf and Phalanx) have indeed solved
Ali's puzzle. Kudos to them! Many other engines have solved a standard chess
problem that happens to begin with the same position.

Now, what does this all prove? Nothing, of course!
