As Sune said it is (too) common to see huge performance fluctuations when there
should be none. I think you should definitely use side instead of color(sq). You
will see the performance gain probably later when you alter your code. I use
Visual C++ 6.0 and it is very easy to get 5% speed up or slow down just be
adding a printf() somewhere in code...
