It depends on your ability.  Some things you can do to accelerate it:
1.  Get some good books.  This is a good place for advice on that:

2.  Take some classes.  After you have learned some basics from good books, you
will be better able to judge if the courses are good ones.

For chess programming, a course in data structures and algorithms would be very
valuable.

I am guessing it will take you 3 years.
