I've had problems too.  John recommended turning off the preference for spoken
move announcements (which is the default when installed).  That helped a lot.
However, Thematic sounds don't work at all, so if I want sounds it's simple
sounds or nothing.

I still have an occasional crash and it seems to be coincident with the screen
saver in XP.  If it's running overnight and the screen saver is set to come on,
inevitably it will crash.  I just keep shipping the crash reports off to Bill
Gates.  If the screen saver is turned off, it's still running in the morning.
This is circumstantial evidence of course, but something to look at.

Setting the compatibility properties to Win98/Me for Chessmaster (right click
the desktop icon) is another possibility although I haven't fooled with that
yet.
