Igor sent me a WinBoard.debug file (thanks!) and with some help from that I found the bug. WinBoard 4.2.4 sometimes gets confused when entering and leaving analysis mode, and forgets to send the engine the right commands. You can usually work around it as follows: (1) Don't select Reset while in analysis mode. If you want to get out of this mode, select Edit Game first. (2) Don't use Analyze File. Instead, use Load Game, and after the game starts, press << if needed to go back to the start, and then select Analysis Mode. I'll include a fix in 4.2.5. I'll probably put that out within the week, so be sure to send any other bug reports you have promptly so that they can get fixed.
