No.  But it won't be as pretty in the endgame without them.  Almost all games
are won before the deep endgame, if the opponents are unevenly matched.  If the
opponents are about equal, there might be a bigger benefit.

Not sure that I understand the question.  Do you mean the crafty.rc file?

I'm afraid I don't understand this question at all.  Maybe you mean this stuff:
1.  Opening book
2.  Endgame tablebase files
3.  crafty.rc file

Those are the only files crafty interacts with when playing chess.  Perhaps you
can spell out more clearly what it is that you are wanting to know.
