In addition to the higher branching factor, I guess that the quality of the evaluation function is very important. And in chess even the best evaluators are close to guesswork in critical positions. To get some semblance of a quality book for chess one could maybe use some kind of Berliner B* search, or Lambda search. But the insurance depth would still be only one additional ply than ordinary search. I.e. one doubling of search time approximately. As an aside, the Dragon is hardly the most forcing of openings. Better some Kings Gambit or the Poisoned-Pawn Najdorf (lots of only moves in most variations.). MvH Dan Andersson
