John (or to all it may concern) -,
Hi, I didn't realize N. Prov. had a chess club (I live in RI too)... I
have been out of the tournament chess scene since the 70's, when I was a very
young teenager... But I have managed to dabble in computer chess over the
years... I have had Fritz 7 for over 2 weeks... and I have been using it
extensively...
I will be happy to answer all questions regarding Fritz 7 (actually
7.0.0.2)... Feel free to post here or directly at: Atony@prodigy.net
Some Rants:
Fritz7 was disappointing until the 7.0.0.2 update ... it is much stronger
now... esp. at blitz...
There is no opening book (well, a very tiny one)... You have to make your
own, by adding games (I used games from the on disk database to create my book,
but I will be buying PowerBook 2002 soon)...
You have to make your own endgame tablebases using an enclosed algorithm
program... This takes a very, very LONG time for 4 & 5 piece endings, and takes
up a lot of disk space, even compressed...
The Help files are great, but not always correct... Ie: the program will not
"talk" unless you set up the files to talk, the Help tells you the wrong way to
do it...
The interface was a bit buggy before the update (clocks were resetting by
themselves, my options were not always saved), but is more stable now...
The analysis mode is great with more options(improved by how much is
anybody's guess)... you do get diff. lines for diff. time limits... very
interesting...
You have to set up a lot of things to get the most out of Fritz 7 (or to
even get some things to work)... you will be spending a lot of time reading Help
files and trying diff. things out... but in my opinion, this is a great program
and well worth the time and effort...
There is a LOT of stuff this program can do... I am finding more every
day... The Help files are extensive and well laid out...
There is hardly anyone on the PlayChess server right now (20 or less at any
given time)... I assume this will grow exponentially as more people get the
program...
... There is a lot more to say about Fritz 7, but I'm tired and have to
take my son to visit a college tomorrow... all I can say, is GET the program,
you will enjoy it ... however, it does take quite an amount of time to master
the intricasies of the program...
-- but the journey is always more fun than the destination...
