I believe that comparsion will confirm your assumption. I've read somewhere newer versions of Crafty seem to be slightly weaker, especially at blitz. If you take another strong freeware program (Yace for example) the result will possibly be different at all because that program's playing strength was significantly increased in the last year. One way to decide if the difference is getting bigger could be to test one up to date version of program A against two different version of program B. But to decide if the outcome of that test is true in general there are much more tests with many different programs necessary. Regards Volker
