Computer chess answers:
"The rumors of my death have been greatly exaggerated."

This is the heyday of computer chess. There are well over 100 chess engines.
There are many excellent commercial products, available at dirt cheap prices.

Hypothetical parallel:
Suppose you want to buy a sports car. Here are two models, almost the same --
but the first will go 140MPH and the second 165MPH. If the price is the same,
you will buy the second. Now, there is no place in the US where you can drive
165MPH or even 140MPH (Montanna now has a speed limit). So it's pent up energy
you can't really use. But still -- somehow you want it.

In the same way -- why buy a copy of Fritz 7 when you can't beat Fritz 6? Why
get Tiger 14 when you can't beat even Tiger 12? Because you know it's better.

Enough is never enough. Because eventually, there will be more. And we'll want
it. No matter how silly it is.

And if ever there was a harmless outlet for going for broke, it's computer
chess. Upgrading a Ferrari every year is quite a strain on the bank account.
Upgrading a chess program is about the cost of taking a friend to lunch.
