I am happy that so many people have had the same thoughts as me. Most of you
have understood what I meant. But I will give a few explanations.
I have been a fan to computer chess since my first tablechess Nova
Constellation 2mhz 1983. But not only for playing. The Constellation was soo
beautiful, like a dream sports car. I could enjoy just looking at it. Yes a
little sick, but I am still alive.
I also loved when I got new PC chessprograms and examined all the wonderful
features. As Fritz skilly way to adopt winboard engines as they were an engine
of the original. And also admiring the clever solutions to problems, like Ed
Schröders genial handicap levels. You really felt as you played with your equal
weak friend. Not the clumsy way some programs were handicapped.
I have always wondered how long the inventors could be able to find new
fascinating features to admire. For those I am willing to pay $50 or a little
more But now when Century 4 with nearly nothing new and the same with Fritz 7,
it seems that the developments has reached an end. They still are wonderful
things, but there must be more than 20 points ELO increase if I shall spend
money on a new one.
In some messages you can understand that analyzing is that important that
writer is willing to pay $50 for a little better analyze skill. But computer
chess market can never live on those people. They are too few. When I say I am a
weak player it is relative. I beat all my friends. And people in general play as
my friends and me. It must be whistles and bells for us to buy new
chessprograms. Don’t despise us that love whistles and bells. I am one of the
oldest in this message group I think. But I still like when it blinks and
tootles :). Men always like toys, but they grew more expensive when you are 60
than when you are 6.

Merry Christmas to all my playfellows.

Georg
