Hi Pavel, > Any other chess program that you would recommend? > > (I have fritz5,6,7 junior6, chessmaster8k, gandalf4.32h) indeed a nice collection... :) Well, what would I recommend ? That's not easy to answer for me - I am more a collector then anything other, I have nearly everything... :) (Only two tops missing: I don't have any Junior and no Hiarcs... But I may change that in the near future... :) Again it depends on you... what you want to do with them... etc... If you love to see them playing eng-eng matches I would recommand to play around with the winboard-world... you will have enough to discover for the next 10 years... especially when you want to get in contacts with some programmers, other persons etc, this is the best choice, no other part of the computer chess community is nearly as friendly and warm then the winboard-world, it's like a big family... as soon as commercial aspects are involved, things get colder... Well, that's life... okay, but now about the other commercials, I would give a try... (This is just an opinion, as less objectiv as any other opinion) Try to get any Shredder. A very good offer is the Millenium package 2001 at the moment. You get Shredder 5 (which I believe is still not much worser then the newest Shredder 6), Deep Shredder 5, Nimzo 2000, SOS and a good chosen part of the 5-stone tablebases... Look at Gambitsoft, current price is really cheap and it get's a clear "recommanded"-stamp from me... (Especially if you don't own any of the programs mentioned there) Also you get Nimzo 2000 and a winboard version of it, which you can use in any other GUI... (But not in ChessBase, simply forget the winboard-adapter there... it's just a piece of crap...) For SOS, Shredder 5 & Deep Shredder 5 there is also an adapter for winboard so that you can use those engines in other GUIs (well, without their own book... but anyway a good option) Why I favor this package over the current Shredder 6 ? I think the Shredder 5 GUI is at least as good as the new Shredder GUI, some said that they like the old one even more... Instead of just one engine, you get 3 engines, Nimzo 2000 is as strong as Nimzo 8 I believe, there isn't to much difference. You also can use them under different GUIs. And you get 4 CD's with the most important 5 men tablebases. And all this for 55$... Hm... what is next... I don't own Hiarcs... without Hiarcs a collection can't be completed... Well, I am waiting for Hiarcs 8 here... Also a Genius is definitely needed... You can get a version of Genius 2 (even a windows version, I think) at GambitSoft for free... You may also think about Rebel Century - Ed is the real dinosaur here and without any rebel a collection can't be completed... :) (Oh well, I met him once at the CSVN-Championship this spring - I think he did want to start a conversation and I was very far away with my mind and didn't know who he is... So the conversation was VERY short... what a pitty... hopefully he was not too angry about me at that point, but I was in 7th heaven, thinking about my wins against TheKing and SOS... :) if you can get somewhere for less money (don't spent more then 10 bucks on it, for sure you will get it somewhere for that price) Chess System Tal 2, get it... it is a very interesting engine - not as strong as the best, but plays with an interesting style... the GUI is somewhat bad, but on the other hand, this now quite old program was already capable to connect to FICS or ICC, I think it was the first commercial program which could do that... So well, at the moment I didn't get more out of my mind... I myself own in addition to the above mentioned software some very old products and the Millenium Package 2000 where Genius 3-6.5 is included... also I own ChessVision which I would recommand NOT to buy... :) But as I have mentioned above, I am a collector, the chess software running the most on my PC is my chess engine and winboard... I am a hardcore winboarder... :) Greets, Thomas P.S.: If someone reads the full posting: At the moment I search a cheap Hiarcs 7.32, a cheap Junior 7 and a cheap MChess Pro, whatever version... So if you want to sell one... contact me... oh, and of course a cheap ChessAcademy 6 to test their winboard adapter...
