Hi Dieter,

This position was a lot more complicated than I thought and as such I guess it's
a lousy test position. Here's the whole game:

Capablanca - Kostic [C42]
Havana, 1919

1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.Nxe5 d6 4.Nf3 Nxe4 5.Qe2 Qe7 6.d3 Nf6 7.Bg5 Qxe2+ 8.Bxe2 Be7

16.Re3 c6 17.Rae1 Kf8 18.Bf4 Nb7 19.h3 h6 20.Bh2 Bd8 21.Rxe8+ Bxe8 22.a4 c5
23.Ne4 Nxe4 24.Bd5 Ra7 25.Bxe4 Be7 26.axb5 axb5 27.dxc5 dxc5 28.Bb8 Ra8 29.Bg3

>Jim, I fear I don't understand the position ...

>I tried 2 things. First I let the K go to g6 without any resistance (2...Kf8
>instead of Kf7). I tried the following line:

>[FEN "8/4bkp1/5p1p/r1pR1P1K/1pP4P/1P2B3/5P2/8 w - -"]

1. Rd7 {1:39m} Ke8 {17s} 2. Rd3 {33s} Kf8 {47s} 3. Kg6 {5s}
Ra3 {38s} 4. Rd5 {24s} Rxb3 {11s} 5. Bxc5 {3s} Bxc5 {6s}
6. Rxc5 {1s} Rh3 *

>I cannot see how to win here. Where is my error?

It's not easy, but I think the main line would go like this:

7. h5 Rh4 8. f3 Rh3 9. Rc8+ Ke7 10. Rc7+ Kd6 (Going to the back rank would be
simlilar to the game continuation.) 11. Rxg7 Rxf3 12. Kxh6 Ke5 13. Rb7 b3 14.
Rb5+ Kd4 15. Kg6 Kxc4 16. Rb6 Rh3 17. h6 and the Black king is out of position
for defending the k-side, White wins.

>Then I also tried under very uncontrolled conditions to follow the suggested
>moves by Yace. Please ignore the thinking times, they are not correct. Also I
>have done some takebacks at several places:

>Other interesting lines I tried ended in 2 new Queens (KQRPKQR) with a pawn on
>f6 or f7. It was not clear to me, but at least not easy to defend, and fast play
>yielded in a win for white.

<snip>

Interesting variations Dieter, the key theme to it all is that White definitely
has the advantage and must slowly exploit it, without allowing Black dangerous
counterplay as in his passed b-pawn becoming threatening or allowing Black to
liquadate down to a drawn R+P ending. The position is very delicate being
another example from book annotations like "and once White penetrates to g6 with
his king the game is as good as over". As you've shown it's not so easy.

All the best,
Jim
