Make sure that you are not running a firewall of some sort (like zonealarm), or
make sure that it is configured properly. I've also found that the program
"nopops" can interfere with a proper connection.

I've found on my machine that the DNS lookup for the server fails the first
time. If I try to connect a second time, then all is well.

In general though, look for any program that is running a proxy on your machine.
If the modem you refer to is actually an analog router (it sounds like it might
be, since you mention an always on connection), then you will need to make sure
that is configured properly too.
