Hi Don: Thanks for you detailed and learned answer about my question. You have pitedf all in few and exact words and still you agree with me that pèrhaps, then, CSTAL is using another kind of approach. You name two different styles of playing chess and maybe we could divide the second one in another category that was very well represented by Lasker style. You know, he played unsound moves just top create problems in the adversary. He played on the supposition -thjat I thionk is correct- that chess is a fight, not a math exercize where precise and demostrabvle methods are the core. Human nature is not done for that, so we invented Dr Spock to supply that :-)So, lasker even did not bother eith openning theroy, but jts played good enough there not to be killed and then he begun to to put traps all around until the oponent fall. And how he puted taps? Just not playing the very best, but the most commplicated, complex move. Fron the point of view of a computer, I suppose this cvan be done selecting moves that have the widest gamut of answers with the widest gamut of bad scores IF the oponet mistake. Of course, this should be suplememntd with a more coventional approach in ordeer to kil at once if such a killing move is available. In other words, if CSTAl see a mate attack following thebest moves, he will execute that, nos sense there to find complications, but if not -and there should be the trick in the evaluation function- then CSTAL, once whe did not find the killing move, maybe then he looks for this kind of complicated moves to crate havoc. Probably there is even another factor of moderation in terms of posiitional considerations. Nevertheless, the very fact that CSTAL do sucidal moves teach me that then this search for complications exist and maybe in a exagerated degree. Chris has been very emphatic in saying he has created something different and I take his words asas serious statements. I have played many games with CSTASL and I can say that is not easy to grasp the intrincacies of his attacks IF you are playing seriously with a clock ticking at your side. That's the emotion of this program, his value. Happy week end Fernando
