The advantage of WinBoard over UCI is a freeware GUI for testing the implementation of the protocol compared to buying a commercial GUI. If you take a look at FQ's Newsticker that may change in the future. The other "problem" would be the willingness of the authors to spend time on another protocol. That is probably the greatest obstacle. But the best WinBoard engines have a welldefined setup under WinBoard and therefore no conversion is necessary IMO. Crafty is a good example. And that accounts for other freeware candidates AFAIK. The reason I brought up UCI is that Yace is compatible to that protocol, which in this case gives it an advantage over the WinBoard setup (IMO). There are also disadvantages in the shape of a Shredder tuned book and probably some learning differences. So there are a few things to consider if the SSDF decides to look at more amateurs in the future. But it should be the authors decision if it ever happens. I hope that it will happen eventually. The exact conditions are secondary in that respect. Regards, Mogens
