You're already doing the right things. I would suggest that, while Chessmaster
8000 is a great tool for kids (don't forget to use the tutorials and even try
playing a "rated game" once in a while), it should not be your only chess
activity. Since you've already discovered ICC, you're doing very well.

As for ICC's traning bot, it is definitely excellent. However, Chessmaster has a
similar feature in its "drills" in the Classroom. Although these drills are
randomly generated, they can be useful. Also, make sure to try some of the basic
mating exercises, such as KQ vs K.
