I disagree with this method.
I think the right way is to find how much time you need to get a fixed depth.

If you reduce the time without adding pruning rules then the change in move
ordering is a good change.

If you fail high for the wrong reason you can waste nodes.

It is better to fail high when the reason is a checkmate and not to fail high
because of winning a pawn.
