And there are plenty of weak commercial programs out there, written essentially to be able to say, "and it plays chess, too." Even Microsoft has a chess program that is not very strong. Also, look in the bargain bin at your software store and you will certainly find a "1000 pc games" CD that has chess on it. It is commercial and nowhere near the strength of the other 3. Plus, you list Chessmaster 8000, but there are places to still buy Chessmaster 4000, which should be weaker.
