It depends on how you define "intermediate beginner". I would classify myself as
such, and would estimate that my rating is only about 1500 USCF. However, I
found that I was THINKING much better chess over the board after reading Bruce
Pandolfini's "Chess Doctor". It talks about general concepts rather than
covering very specific examples (which leave the reader the problem of trying to
apply those examples to his/her games).

Perhaps this book is too much leaning towards "beginner", but *I* found it very
helpful.
