Free stuff which is easy enough for just about anyone to use: Arasan: http://jdart.best.vwh.net/download.htm Bringer: http://www.reubold.onlinehome.de/bringer/BringerV1_9.zip Since they are free, you could download both of them, and see if they are pleasing. For commercial stuff, ChessMaster 8000 is strong, full featured, and inexpensive. (Maybe $30 or so and you can find it nearby to your house). Chess Tiger, Rebel, Hiarcs, Fritz, and Junior are all strong, full-featured chess programs. Less than $100 if you shop around. Hard to find locally, so buy from someone you trust on the internet. ICD (which hosts this site) sells chess software. If you don't mind spending over $100, you could look at Chess Assistant or ChessBase, which have not only strong chess playing programs, but also have extensive database systems to study openings and things like that. I would recommend reading Bob Pawlak's reviews on chess software. I bought his book on that stuff, which has a lot of nice explanations. Probably, he'll be happy whatever you do, since it shows you care about him.
