Subject: Finding mate in N moves

If I have a position and I want to find out if there is a forced mate, will I
have better chances using something like Chessmaster's "Search for mate"
feature, or by simply putting Fritz to work on the position for a few days?

Will a regular alpha-beta search miss any mates due to a pruned branch?
