I still use it, although in a more restrictive form than I had a few versions ago. Last I tried, taking it out was worse than leaving it in. I have also recently been experimenting with a capture extension that adds a small amount (1/2 ply) of depth to captures of pieces (not pawns) at higher depths in the search tree. The theory here is that captures, even losing ones, often have side-effects: maybe opening a line to the king, changing the material balance (which affects king safety and can have major effects in the endgame), and so on. You can't afford to extend on all captures because a lot are junk, which is why I limit it by depth. But it seems to help on testsuites and not to hurt playing strength. --Jon
