Sounds to me like a variation of the Turing Test, but harder to detect since the player has a direct input in deliberately losing games occasionally. Of course, the way in which he loses would give an indication of his true playing strength. I reckon an analysis of a fairly large number of his games would throw up bizarre inconsistencies which would show he was cheating.
