Hi, I posted this message on the Crafty Yahoo group, but only got one response; that another user has seen the same error message with WB 4.2.5 and another engine. I'm a novice player and new to computer chess. I hope someone can explain what is going on. I have downloaded and installed the latest version of Winboard (v4.2.5) and wcrafty (18.12) and I'm having some trouble. I am getting "Illegal move" errors with moves that are legal. Here is a simple "paste game to clipboard" example from Winboard: [Event "Computer chess game"] [Site "VAIO"] [Date "2002.01.04"] [Round "-"] [White "Administrator"] [Black "Crafty-18.12"] [Result "*"] [TimeControl "40/300"] 1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d5 3. d4 Nf6 4. Nc3 g6 * If white now tries any move with the KB, an error message appears under the Winboard time control that says: Illegal move "Bxx" (rejected by first chess program); Bxx is any of the 5 possible moves of the KB along the open diagonal. Why won't Crafty allow any of these moves....they may not be smart but they are legal. Here is my shortcut command-line that I use to launch Winboard/Crafty: D:\Chess\winboard\winboard.exe -cp -fcp "wcrafty.exe" - fd "D:\chess\crafty" I've renamed the latest wcrafty executable wcrafty.exe for easy typing. Also, the book.bin and books.bin files are in the same folder as the wcrafty executable. FWIW, Here is another example that generates the same error: [Event "Computer chess game"] [Site "VAIO"] [Date "2002.01.04"] [Round "-"] [White "Administrator"] [Black "Crafty-18.12"] [Result "*"] [TimeControl "40/300"] 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Nc3 g6 4. Nd5 Bg7 * Again, any move with the white KB generates the Illegal move error. Interestingly, if you go to the help menu in Winboard and select 'Book', the suggested move is Bc4....a move that generates the error. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Gregg
