What you have to do is to run this in "Debug" mode in winboard. It is just a switch in the command line but unfortunately I do not remember it now and www.tim-mann.org is down right now. I think it is -debug or -windebug or something in from of the command line. That will generate a file winboard.debug that has all the details of the communication between winboard and crafty.
