There is one significant limitation and that would be the opening book. But the freeware UCI compatible engines have their own book (as far as I can remember), eg. Yace, AnMon and Pepito, so they can be used in a match against WinBoard engines. Not a major difference since they exist in WinBoard versions as well. Shredder 5 and SOS 11/2000 (Shredder 5 package) is dependant on the GUI for bookmoves, so they will play without a book like The King for example. The "cool" stuff is that you can exploit the UCI engine options under Arena. This means that all UCI engines have the same modifiable features available as under the Shredder GUI. This means that you can create your own Shredder personalities or adjust Yace's parameters. So in some cases it could be an advantage to use Yace as an UCI engine instead. AFAIK the UCI behaviour in matches still have a few problems. But I imagine that the author can overcome those eventually with a bit of help. Regards, Mogens
