I can only take a few low-probability guesses:

1. Low-quality RAM modules being used?

2. Computer virus?

3. Some very bad mis-configuration of the OS? Vastly insufficient RAM?

4. Horribly bad electricity in the house?

5. House was built over ancient burial ground??
