I must say, the search under Windows, when you have large hard disks and many
tens of thousands of files, leaves something to be desired. It can take 30-90
seconds to find something on my 1.2 GHz Athlon with RAID. On my Macintosh,
there are several 3rd party goodies that can search 100,000 files (100 GB across
4 hard disks) in perhaps 2 seconds. I don't know what they do differently (I
know they do NOT index the disks -- I hate tools that do that), but the
difference in speed is overwhelming. I've tried perhaps 2 dozen 3rd-party
Windows search tools, some of which are quite a bit faster than Microsoft's, but
none is anywhere near as fast as at least 5 separate tools I've used on the Mac
(plus all the Windows ones are much clumsier and more awkward to use).

I'm trying to use my Windows PC to replace what I've done for years on my Mac
(manage tens of thousands of media files and pieces of shareware/freeware, among
other things). If you know of an ultra-fast search tool for Windows, especially
one that can transparently replace Microsoft's, please, please let me know!
