I am confused about the Optimize Strength feature in Fritz.
The Optimize Strength feature is only available in the Long games and Blitz
modes. When optimizing strength, in addition to some features being turned off,
the Hash Tables are set to the HIGHEST setting. As far as I know, you should not
have the Hash Tables set too high for Blitz. The Fritz 7 help files suggests 4
to 64 MB as plenty for Blitz. So, if that is the case, why does Optimize
Strength set the Hash Tables in Blitz to the Hightest setting. The functions
that are turned off, such as multimedia, can be done manually.
The opening book options are usually configured manually also. In fact,
everytime you change the time control, the "variety of play" option is turned
up, so you have to manually turn it down again. Many do not realize that.
I only have a 350 MHz Pent II, with 384 sdram. The maximum Hash Table setting
for my program with that much ram should only be 288 MB, according to Fritz.
Chessbase suggests the formula for optimal Hash Tables to be as follows:
2 x (Processor Speed) x (Avg. Seconds per move) divided by 1000 to give you the
proper Hash Table MB setting. Based on a 5 minute speed game, which would be
approximately 7.5 seconds per move (DUE TO THE FACT THAT THE FIRST 10 MOVES ARE
USUALLY INSTANTANEOUS AND THE AVERAGE GAME IS AROUND 50 MOVES.
For my system, based on the formula now, the maximum Hash Table setting for a 5
minute speed game should only be 5.25 or 5 to 6 MB rather.
2 x Processor Speed x Avg. Seconds per move
2 x 350 MHz 300 SEC divided by 40 moves
700 x 5.25 divided by 1000 = 5.25
That is a far cry from what the Optimize Strength feature will set it at for a 5
minute game.
Any insights on this would be greatly appreciated.
