Crafty source has examples of inline assembly and console i/o under gcc/Linux. If you want to test under Linux, and have enough disk space for a Linux partition, it is not terribly hard to set up a Windows PC to dual-boot Linux + Windows. Linux can mount FAT or FAT32 format disks, which makes file transfer relatively easy. --Jon
