You are correct. Kurt is using special settings (I believe of his own devising).
The SSDF used the default personality, which is designed to be the optimum for
ALL possible time controls and ALL possible processor speeds. Therefore, when
tested at tournament time controls on fast hardware, programs such as Fritz will
tend to do noticeably better than the default Chessmaster personality.

However, it should also be noted that the default personality tends to win blitz
tournaments against almost all user-created CM personalities that have been
posted here. Settings such as Kurt's are almost always designed for either
tournament time controls or for lengthy analysis.

Currently, I am very interested in the "Winter Rapid" tournament that is in
progress. Chessmaster (i.e. The King) is currently tied for first at 4.5 out of
5, but has yet to play any of the other "heavyweights" (although, statistically
speaking, it certainly could have lost to Crafty, Bringer or GLC). Gandalf is up
next....
